Major Responsibilities:

Reporting to a Senior Internal Auditor, the Internal Auditor conducts operational, compliance and financial internal audits.  By conforming to the Standards for Professional Practice of Internal Auditing, the Internal Auditor ensures the City’s practices are in compliance to City legislation, policies, and procedures.

Perform audits of City departments and related Boards.  Obtain and document understanding of business objectives and processes.  Perform risk assessments, determine audit scope and objectives, and develop audit programs.  Evaluate and test controls to determine existence, adequacy, completeness and effectiveness.  Perform audits to identify opportunities to mitigate risk and make recommendations for improvement.  Evaluate processes for efficiency and compliance to legislative and corporate requirements.  Prepare audit working papers to document test results, findings and conclusions.  Prepare reports on findings and provide recommendations for positive change.  Communicate audit findings and recommendations to City departments.

Miscellaneous business reviews and investigations. Conduct special assignments, investigations and other related duties as assigned by the Senior Internal Auditor.  Assist Senior Internal Auditor as required.

Assist External Auditors in completion of annual audits of financial statements.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

·        University or college degree in business or equivalent.

·        Minimum 5 years practical experience as an auditor, preferably in the public sector.

·        Professional designation (CIA, CA, CMA, CGA) an asset.

·        Knowledge of risk assessment methodologies preferred.

·        Demonstrated project management experience.

·        Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

·        Ability to provide and demonstrate above average customer service skills.

·        Demonstrated computer skills (including word processing, spreadsheets, flowcharts, audit software, accounting and database software).

·        Knowledge of business accounting standards.

·        Ability to prioritize and multi-task.

·        Excellent initiative, problem solving and analytical skills.

·        Ability to lead meetings.
